Department History
Oroville Fire Department – Serving & Protecting Our Community
The Oroville Fire Department is dedicated to providing the highest level of fire and life safety services to the community. As our city grows, we continuously work to improve our emergency response and safety initiatives.
Our Core Values
-
Professionalism – Delivering expert emergency services.
-
Integrity – Upholding honesty and accountability.
-
Dedication – Committed to the protection of life and property.
A Legacy of Fire Service
Established in 1856, the Oroville Fire Department was the second fire company in California, following Sacramento City Fire Department.
-
Early firefighters used a hay wagon loaded with fire equipment.
-
After six months, the original wagon was lost in a fire and replaced through donations from local miners.
-
Oroville’s gold rush boom and proximity to the Feather River increased the demand for fire service.
For more on Oroville’s history, visit the Butte County Historical Society.
Modern Fire Protection & Equipment
The fire department has evolved into a professional and volunteer-staffed organization, strengthened by recent investments:
-
New fire engine and aerial ladder truck.
-
Strong partnerships with Butte County Fire and Cal Fire Forestry through the Oroville Automatic Aid Agreement.
Specialized Response & Community Partnerships
-
Hazardous materials response – Oroville is part of the Butte County Hazardous Materials Team.
-
Technical and water rescue – Managed by the Butte Interagency Rescue Group.
-
Public safety education – Supported by the Interagency Fire Safety Trailer, funded by Oroville Kiwanis Club.
-
Fire training and emergency coordination – Led by the Local Fire Chiefs Association.
The Oroville Fire Department remains committed to preserving life and property through expert fire suppression, rescue services, and safety education.
