FAQ's

How do I know if I’m in violation?

Parcels with weeds that are 4 inches or taller will be considered in violation and could face penalties, along with all costs related to the abatement process. The city's weed abatement efforts are not a service but a measure to enforce safety regulations. For parcels larger than 1 acre, a 30-foot-wide bare ground perimeter must surround the entire lot.

Am I within City Limits?

To search for your parcel visit: City of Oroville Planning (planningsites.org)

When is the deadline for weed abatement?

The deadline for mowing, disking, and cleaning properties is June 15th each year. However, if late spring rains occur, properties might need to be mowed or disked multiple times to meet the city's standards.

My neighbor’s house or vacant property is possibly out of compliance. Can I report the status of this property?

You can call the City of Oroville’s Code Enforcement Department at (530) 538-2498 or email Code Enforcement for assistance. The department values public involvement to help lower risks in the community. Complaints received will be addressed individually, taking into account whether the property is a fire hazard or creates a nuisance

There is debris and garbage on my property, and I didn’t put it there – why am I responsible?

As the property owner, you are solely responsible for keeping your property in good condition.

I no longer own the property, why was I sent a Weed Abatement Notice?

Sometimes, our records might not be completely up to date. The Weed Abatement Notice is sent to the most recent owner listed on the Butte County assessment roll. If you no longer own the property, please contact the Code Enforcement Department at (530) 538-2498 or email Code Enforcement to update the property owner information.

Can I request an extension?

For requests, you can call (530) 538-2498 or email Code Enforcement. Extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis, as long as the parcel does not pose an immediate threat, such as a fire hazard, to the surrounding area
