The city presently maintains trees in city right of ways, parks, and open spaces.
Is it a private or city owned tree?
Before pruning or cutting a tree in front of your property, you need to figure out if it’s a city-owned tree or a private one. Here are some tips to help:
-
Parkway location: If the tree is in the parkway (the area between the curb and sidewalk), it is city-owned.
-
No parkway: If there’s no parkway but there is a curb and sidewalk, trees within 5 feet of the sidewalk are usually city-owned.
-
No curb or sidewalk: If there’s no curb or sidewalk, the city may have a right-of-way that extends 15 feet or more beyond the edge of the roadway
When in doubt, it’s always best to call your city to check tree ownership. Cutting or pruning a city-owned tree without permission can result in fines
